First sub-40 hour EV crossing. First non-Tesla to hold the EV record. The Taycan's 800V architecture enables faster charging, cutting stop times significantly vs. previous Tesla-based attempts.

The EV Challenge
Electric Cannonball runs face a fundamentally different challenge than gas or diesel: charging infrastructure dictates the route. While ICE cars worry about fuel capacity, EV runners must plan every stop around charger locations, speeds, and reliability. The gap has narrowed dramatically — from 55 hours in 2016 to under 40 in 2024 — driven almost entirely by improvements in charging speed and battery capacity. The 800V architecture of the Taycan was the breakthrough that finally cracked sub-40, enabling 270 kW charging peaks that cut stop times nearly in half compared to 400V Teslas.

Porsche Taycan RWD (Large Battery)
39:29

Time: 39 hours, 29 minutes

Vehicle: 2025 Porsche Taycan RWD with large battery pack

Team: Kyle Conner (Out of Spec Reviews), Tijmen Schreur, Drew Peterson

Key advantage: 800V architecture enabling 270 kW peak charging speeds. Charging stops averaged under 20 minutes — roughly half the time of 400V Tesla stops on previous attempts.

First non-Tesla to hold the EV Cannonball record. The Taycan's superior charging curve made the difference — maintaining higher power levels through more of the charge session.

A family affair — the Thomsens took the record with careful Supercharger planning, proving that the Model 3's efficiency could offset its smaller battery compared to the Model S.

Roy — already a Cannonball legend from his 2006 gasoline record — turned his attention to EVs. Pushed the record under 51 hours at a time when the Supercharger network was still sparse in many regions.

The run that started it all for EV Cannonball. Also set the autonomous driving record simultaneously. The Supercharger network was barely coast-to-coast, forcing creative routing and anxiety-inducing range management. Set the benchmark that every subsequent attempt would chase.

Modified 2022 Rivian R1T · 310 kWh battery
PENDING

Vehicle: 2022 Rivian R1T — heavily modified with auxiliary battery pack in the truck bed

Battery: 310 kWh total (stock + salvaged Rivian modules from crash-test yard)

Theoretical range: ~620 miles at 2 mi/kWh

Charging: Dual-charger setup — stock + auxiliary charge simultaneously, hitting 400 kW effective combined rate. 300 kW sustained on the aux pack.

Best test: 510 miles at 68 mph average on a single charge

A DIY shoestring-budget attempt. The bed is packed with extra Rivian battery modules sourced from salvage yards. The strategy banks on massive range to minimize charging stops — the opposite approach to the Taycan's fast-charging strategy.

Time: 44 hours, 32 minutes (did not break record)

Vehicle: Lucid Air Grand Touring

Team: Kyle Conner and Out of Spec Motoring crew, with Polestar 1 pace car driven by Alyssa Zupan

Date: April 2023

The Lucid Air's 300+ kW charging at EVgo stations showed promise, but inconsistent third-party charger reliability killed the attempt. Francis Energy stations forced the team to reset the connection every 10 minutes to maintain power. In the final stretch, traffic and blocked DCFCs sealed the result — 44:32, over two hours off the record pace.

Silver lining: The Polestar 1 pace car set a new plug-in hybrid Cannonball record at 45:38.
